Characteristic

1 613 km2; Mountain range of the Mahale Mountains (773 – 2 460 m) that runs from the northwest to the southeast across the park. Typical ecosystems: forested savannah, lowland rain forest, mountain cloud forest, lake biotopes. Mozaic eco-zone - mixture of west- and east-African fauna and flora.

Possible activities

Mahale Mountains

Trekking (exception among the African parks) - park must be experienced by foot, lots of pathways, there are no roads. Long walking trips can be arranged for viewing big game. These safaris may require up to 7 days.

Mountain climbing, snorkelling, swimming, kayaking and relaxing on deserted, pristine, white, sandy beaches.

Best time to visit V-X

Remote national park; it is said to be one of the most beautiful national parks in Africa

Conservation of indigenous fish of Lake Tanganyika: no fishing (except under special licence) is permitted within 1.6 km of the shore line
