Northeast of the New Zealand´s North Island

Access

Quite difficult.

Characteristic

2 127 km2; Rugged mountainous area with several parallel mountain ridges, plenty of waterfalls and two beautiful lakes in its southern part. Lakes up to 250 m deep were formed by a giant landslide about 2200 years ago. Typical ecosystems: temperate zone forests, mountainous ecosystems, lakes and rivers. The largest remaining area of native forest in the North Island.
