Central and South America

From the geological point of view, South America was attached the North America not a long time ago – about 3 million years ago when the Isthmus of Panama was formed. The Andas, a relatively young and seismically restless mountain range, runs down the western border of the continent – the land to the east of the Andas is covered predominantly by tropical rain forests of the Amazon river basin. However, you can find here drier territories as well e.g. Patagonia and the extremely dry Atacama Desert.

There are also many unique things to see – the highest waterfall of the world – Angel Falls in Venezuela, the largest river – the Amazon River, the longest mountain range in the world – the Andas, the driest desert – the Atacama Desert, the largest rain forest – the Amazon rain forest, the highest railroad – Ticlio in Peru, the highest capital city – La Paz in Bolivia, the highest commercially navigable lake in the world – Lake Titicaca and the world´s southernmost town – Puerto Toro in Chile.

There live also many very interesting and unique animal species including llamas, anacondas, piranhas, jaguars, vicugnas and tapirs.
